Advice On Food And Wine

Have you ever met someone that becomes anxious about entertaining people in their home? Are you of the people that avoids having people over for fear of what to serve them? There is no need to take entertaining so seriously. I love to entertain. I had a wonderful teacher, my mother. She was a great cook as well as a wonderful hostess. She taught us how to set a table and how to serve guests as the table as well as making them comfortable in the home.

So many times people do not think about the full experience of making a guest feel welcomed. They will concentrate on the food and wine, but not put effort into the greeting at the door and the welcoming of the guest. I have been at many social gatherings where the feeling for the event is set within my first two minutes of walking into the setting. A good example is a holiday party that we went to last year. My husband and I have had people from our church over for drinks and appetizers for several years. One of the couples has enjoyed this so much that they now do the same thing. Last year was the first year. When we arrived at the house the host greeted us at the door and showed us where to hang our coats. He then told us to make ourselves comfortable while he went to finish making drinks for those that were already there. The hostess was so concerned about the food and wine that she did not make an appearance out of the kitchen for the first half hour that we were there. She insisted she did not need any help. As guests we visited with each other and talked about community events. About an hour after the party was scheduled to start the host and hostess started putting food and wine out on the table. The hostess was obviously very nervous about the food she was serving and concerned that everyone would like it. It made for an uncomfortable feeling in the group.

When I talked to my daughter about this after that evening she told me that she is always nervous also because she does not know what food and wine goes together. I told her that I always have a nice selection of both white and red wines. I leave them on the bar and let people help themselves, if it is a sit down meal I leave both kinds on the table. I like certain kinds of wines better than others so I drink what I like, regardless of the food that is being served. People get too caught up in what wine goes with which food, I feel it is all personal preference. Have a nice selection and let the person decide for themselves whet they want to drink with their food.
